Eastport, Maine/Deer Island, Canada

July 15-22, 2007: Dive Society 4th annual Eastport Maine trip

We are off to Eastport again this year and this year we are renting a house again.

View of front of house used as base camp. Huge deck overlooking water at base camp.

Join us as we explore even more dive sites than last year and see why we call the diving here the Carribean of New England. This year we will also be diving Deer Island in Canada again, no passport required this year. Marine life that you might encounter while diving on this trip might include, Wolffish, more types of starfish that you could imagine, Northen Red Sea Anemones, Orange footed cucumbers, Rosefish and Giant Losbsters that aren't afraid of you.

Giant lobster ready to do battle with any diver that gets too close. Smooth sunstar with sea urchins and sea peaches.

We have rented a 3-bedroom house in Eastport on Water Street near the ferry landing to act as a base camp. The house has a large yard with a garage for our dive gear and a large deck overlooking the ocean for our frequent cookouts. The house is already fully rented to divers and staff. Please contact me if you plan to go to Eastport even if you are not staying at the house. Email me at diverdon40@yahoo.com

Please note that most divers do not stay the entire week, most make it a long weekend coming up thursday thru sunday so you only have to take 2 vacation days. Most divers will drive up on thursday and do 1 dive late on thursday dive friday and saturday and then do one early dive sunday and then drive home. It is approximately a 6 1/2 drive to Eastport. This is only one example of the trip you can do.

You should contact us if you plan to go on this trip to discuss the dive conditions in Eastport. We are shore diving an some of the entrys are strenous (long walks and rocky entrys). Although we try to dive at slack tide current is still present and you should be able to handle yourself if you encounter some current. The water temp would be approx. 46-48 deg. We only do one dive every 6 hours due to tide so hardy wetsuit divers are welcome.

For divers unable to get a room at the base camp house, or their family’s not staying the whole week there will be room at any of the following:
Harris Point Motel and Cabins in Eastport (207) 853-4303. Harris Point is a short drive from base camp and has a clean basic 8 unit motel with rooms approx $40 per night. They also have cottages that sleep 2-5 people and range from $50-$65 per night.
Motel East. Waterfront motel at one of the dive sites we dive. Cost per room is $120 per night with 2 queen beds. Their website is http://www.eastportme.info/moteleast.html
There are also several bed and breakfast places in eastport and here is that link to their websites http://www.eastportme.info/bb.html

Don Morse and Tom Conway will be diving all week as dive guides for all divers. Most days we will have a cookout at the base camp with the exception of if we go to the WACO or Happy Crab.

We would like to also book a windjammer cruise as we did last year, this would be weather permitting and is a 3 hr cruise. The date for that will be set when we get to Eastport.

So what is the total cost of this trip?
