PADI Open Water Diver

Learn to Dive in 3 Easy Steps!

  1. Classroom
  2. Pool Dives
  3. Ocean Dives

The PADI Open Water Course is the first step towards discovering the underwater world. If you’ve always wanted to learn how to scuba dive, discover new adventures or simply see the wondrous world beneath the waves, this is where it starts.

Step 1: Home Study & Classroom

In this first phase you develop an understanding of the basic principles of scuba diving. You will learn things like how pressure affects your body, what type of equipment you need and much more. You begin with home study prior to the start of class. You will read chapters in the PADI manual as well as watching a DVD. Once you are in the classroom you will review the 5 knowledge sections of the PADI manual with your instructor and take a few quizzes to make sure you have all the key concepts and ideas down. The classroom & pool steps are combined in 1 class that is conducted on either 2 Saturdays or 4 weeknight days. (Weeknight class start in the spring and end in September)

Step 2: Pool Dives

Now this is where the excitement and fun really begins! In this second phase you develop basic scuba skills by scuba diving in a pool. While in the pool you will attain skills that will make you a smart and safe diver in the ocean. You will learn everything from how to set up your gear, to clearing your mask and learning some emergency skills.

Pool sessions are held at the Bennett Center at Gordon College in Wenham, about a 10-15 minute drive from the shop. The address is 255 Grapevine Road, Wenham, 01984.

Step 3: Ocean Dives

This last phase is where you fully experience the underwater adventure. The open water component is designed to give you maximum exposure to the actual diving environment under supervision. There are a total of 4 ocean dives that will be conducted over a 2 day span (2 dives Saturday , 2 dives Sunday). Each dive consists of skill levels that help you develop your proficiency in the open water. In the winter months we do not hold ocean dives. Ocean dives are conducted from May to October.
